The Classic Heirloom Bell Pepper for Bountiful Harvests
Discover the timeless appeal of California Wonder, an heirloom bell pepper variety cherished by gardeners since 1928. This large, blocky pepper matures in 68–80 days, producing thick-walled, glossy green fruits that eventually ripen into a vibrant red. With its impressive 4-inch size and iconic bell shape, California Wonder remains a staple in traditional pepper cultivation.
California Wonder peppers bring versatility and rich flavor to the kitchen. Their thick walls make them excellent for stuffing, while their sweet, mild taste enhances salads, stir-fries, roasted dishes, and grilled recipes. As the fruits transition from green to red, they develop greater sweetness and significantly higher vitamin C content—often exceeding that of an orange when fully ripe. Their uniform size and classic shape make them ideal for both everyday meals and gourmet presentations.
These vigorous plants reach 24–30 inches in height with a spread of 18–24 inches, typically producing 4–5 sizable peppers per plant throughout the season. They thrive in full sun and adapt well to a wide range of climates, performing reliably in both cooler and warmer growing regions. Harvest the fruits green for a mild flavor or leave them to ripen on the plant for sweeter, red peppers.
